“I like narrative storytelling as being part of a tradition, a folk tradition.” This led to a rejuvenation of the folk music genre, which in turn motivated the folk artists of the early 1960’s.
They wrote new lyrics that stood up to labor-union issues and addressed civil rights injustice. The American folk singers of the 1940’s and 1950’s, including Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and their shared band, The Almanac Singers, led a popular folk movement that revitalized the entire folk song tradition. Some rock fans viewed folk music to be dated, an ancient dinosaur, and a music genre from the past with no need for innovative instruments or even electricity. Folk purists rejected rock and labeled it to be an unrefined product designed for mass appeal. On the other hand, folk music represented more of a communal experience. Even in its earliest stages, rock music was becoming a big, loud, and rebellious business. Record sales and live artist appearances enabled record companies, promoters, and managers to make a profit.
The earliest rock music was a corporate phenomenon in the sense that someone, usually a professional songwriting team, wrote a song while someone else performed it. This well-established norm of folk music represented its own time period and different regions of the country. Some folk artists did want to take ownership of their original songs, but most folk music grew out of setting new lyrics to old (often really old) melodies. They were not considered to be the property of composers who took ownership of their own songs. It represented a populist music genre and most folk songs came from a shared culture. Folk music was a language of and for the people. Folk music was created by (and for) purists who were generally not motivated by financial gain or commercial endeavors.
Folk-Rock, Bob Dylan, and Singer/Songwritersīefore the first seeds of rock music generated legendary artists such as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley, the genre of folk music was separate from rock in virtually every way possible.
